The history of the castle at HaHa Tonka State Park is as fascinating as the landscape itself. The castle, known as the "Stone Ruins," was the dream of a wealthy Kansas City businessman named Robert McClure Snyder. In the early 20th century, Snyder purchased nearly 5,000 acres of land around the Lake of the Ozarks and began constructing his vision of a grand European-style castle. The construction of the castle began in 1905 and involved skilled stonemasons brought over from Europe. The structure was built with locally quarried stone, adding to its authentic charm. Tragically, before the castle could be completed, a fire broke out in 1942, destroying much of the interior and leaving behind the haunting stone ruins we see today. After Snyder's death, the land was eventually acquired by the state of Missouri and established as HaHa Tonka State Park in 1978.
